DAILY FIX: Grimes, "Oblivion"

Canadian electronic musician Claire Boucher's only been recording under the name Grimes for about two years now, but she's already released three full length albums. The latest, Visions, dropped two weeks ago on 4AD and has grabbed a lot of attention in the blogosphere with its catchy synth-driven pop tracks. Its first single, "Oblivion," is a particularly excellent example of the charms that Grimes' music has to offer--Boucher's high, ethereal vocals are pleasantly offset by a bouncy, propulsive groove that sweeps listeners up with its momentum. Its irresistible chorus hook all but demands repeat listenings. The video for the track is even more interesting, as Boucher wanders around several different arenas that are in the midst of hosting rural sporting events--among them a motorcross and what appears to be either a big high school or small college football game--listening to her song through large headphones connected to a boombox and singing along. Judging from the interactions she has with the sporting-event crowds, most of them do not seem to be prepared for the fact that they're in a video, which causes both charming and awkward scenes. The overall effect is entertaining and fun, though, just like the song itself. I expect big things from Grimes in 2012; check out this song now and be the first of your friends to catch the wave.
