DAILY FIX: The Silent Age, "Hard Lesson To Learn"

Here's a brand new video from The Silent Age, a melodic post-hardcore band formed by local metalcore veteran Myke Terry last year after his departure from his previous gig as lead vocalist for Bury Your Dead. Clearly Myke was looking to shift gears musically, as The Silent Age don't have an ounce of metal in their sound. Instead, on new single "Hard Lesson To Learn," they mix a driving rhythm section with melodic guitar leads and a gorgeous, unforgettable chorus, featuring two-part vocal harmonies. The video, in which two small children must work together to protect themselves and each other from a sudden zombie attack, is just as unforgettable. Directed by Dave O'Dell, the video features special makeup effects by Beth Gorley and Hannah Elvington, who do a great job of turning a couple dozen local scenesters into shambling, flesh-craving undead. The contrast between the video's disturbing subject matter and the melodic focus of the music is somewhat striking, but I guess Myke Terry hasn't quite left his metal past behind, after all. Since their performance at the inaugural RVA Music Fest last fall, The Silent Age have mostly stayed out of the public eye--let's hope the release of the "Hard Lesson To Learn" video is just the beginning of a much more active 2012 for this local group.
