I can't recall the Boulevard without Velocity Motorcycles--the glorious chrome flashing in the sun and catching my eye as I passed by the shop. Occasionally those trips would inspire fantasy of selling my truck and drifting the open road. Bouncing from town to town with a sack of clothes, looking for odd jobs to get from one place to the next. Those brief moments were the closest to a Ducati I've ever been.
I've always resented the fact that I've never driven a motorcycle; so owning one is at the top my the list of things to do before I die. Between not being able to afford a bike, the insurance, and the lack of time associated with obtaining my motorcycle license, I assume that when I'm knee deep in my forties, I'll forgo the usual Corvette midlife crisis-mobile and buy a hog instead. But the closer I get to a bike, the more I crave the winds against my face and the growl of thunder underneath me.
I met with Velocity's manager, Bryan, at their new shop on West Marshall St. for a short history lesson, and to discuss their upcoming 13th anniversary block party, taking place this Saturday, June 9th, from 2-8 PM.
Why did you guys decide to throw a block party/pig-roast to celebrate your 13 years of business?
To thank all of our friends and patrons for the first 12 years of helping Velocity be the shop that Richmonders go to for great sales and service on new and vintage bikes.
What is Riders For Readers and how will the $5 suggested donation benefit them?
Riders for Readers is a non-profit organization promoting early childhood literacy by encouraging recreational reading in the greater Richmond area. Donations buy books for distribution at elementary schools, which further the [cause] and help children experience how fun reading is!.
Velocity recently moved to a new location. What does the new shop have that the old one did not?
The new shop is much more efficient in overall interior layout and outdoor parking. We've slimmed down our in-house storage and focused more on our Royal Enfield line of new motorcycles and what we do best, the repair and restoration of vintage motorcycles.
