Virginia-based metal band Darkest Hour have been cranking out great albums for over 15 years now, and that legacy was carried on quite capably on their latest album, The Human Romance, released last year on E1 Music. Though that album has been out for over a year, Darkest Hour are still making videos for singles from it, and we were particularly impressed by this new video for "Severed Into Separates." The video was created by a Hungarian studio called Mihaszna Film, and their understandably extensive knowledge of the depopulated architecture of Eastern Europe and the former Soviet bloc comes heavily into play in the clip. Using locations where brutalist concrete buildings stand vacant and overgrown, and mixing in some evocative CGI work that mimics time-lapse photography, they recreate an entire abandoned city, building it up and then tearing it down before the eyes of an observer who struggles not to be emotionally overwhelmed by what he sees. Or at least, that's what we get out of the story. You may see something completely different. Regardless, it's a great short film, and the Darkest Hour song that soundtracks it is a catchy slab of melodic yet powerful metal, of the sort that we've come to expect from these native sons of the Commonwealth.
