We just heard about this, but we're super excited, and I'm guessing you will be too! Legendary novelist Tom Robbins, who graduated from VCU back when it was still Richmond Professional Institute, will be receiving a lifetime achievement award as part of the 2012 Virginia Literary Festival. And while he's in town, he'll be introducing a free screening of Even Cowgirls Get The Blues, the 1994 film adaptation of his most famous novel, at the Byrd Theatre! The film, directed by Gus Van Sant, stars Uma Thurman as Sissy Hankshaw, a woman born with very large thumbs who is therefore a gifted hitchhiker. It features a narrative voiceover by Robbins himself, and Robbins will speak onstage before the film begins. This is not his only Richmond appearance during the Virginia Literary Festival--he'll also be giving the keynote address at Saturday's Literary Luncheon at the Greater Richmond Convention Center--but unlike that event's $45 admission price (and by the way, if you've got the scratch, tickets are available HERE), the Even Cowgirls Get The Blues screening is FREE! Chop Suey Books will also be on hand selling copies of Robbins' novels, so you can take this opportunity to fill in the gaps in your collection. And of course, you'll have a rare opportunity to see Even Cowgirls Get The Blues on the big screen! The screening starts at 7:15 PM on Thursday, October 18 at the Byrd Theatre, located at 2908 W. Cary St. in Carytown. For more info on the screening and the 2012 Virginia Literary Festival, click HERE.
