You have to hand it to Big East. Picking up right where Amazing Ghost left off, the Richmond-based group really seem to be setting their sights for greatness early in the game. With the release of Fone Store Volume One on 10K Islands, Edward Prendergast and company are showing off quite a few chops. Tracks like “Heatwave,” “Green Dust,” and “Our Times” are prime examples of potential favorites for new and old fans alike. The leadoff track and first single, “Knock Em Out,” is definitely an indicator of what sets Big East apart from its predecessor. With its tale of late night fisticuffs and the unavoidable situations in which we find ourselves when trash talk becomes involved, Big East have created the perfect soundtrack for any late night adventure. Now imagine this scenario but with the aesthetic of classic kung-fu action sequences of yesteryear. Big East guitarist/cinema aficionado Scott Burton has assembled quite the video collage that incorporates this beloved era of film, accompanied by “Knock Em Out” as its fitting soundtrack. It’s definitely worth a dozen or so watches, and kudos to you if you can figure out the origins of all the sequences included.
