The Rear Gallery is a new artspace that just opened recently here in RVA. A collaboration between four local artists, Laurie Lay, Elysia Houghton, Sean Jones, and Evangeline Rutherford, the gallery has been operating under the radar for the past couple of months. However, with their first official exhibition scheduled to open this Friday, January 18, the Rear Gallery is starting to attain a bit of a public profile, and there'll be an unofficial introduction of sorts taking place at a benefit show for the Rear Gallery tomorrow night at the Nile Cafe.
Battlemaster
Local metal warriors Battlemaster will be headlining the show, and they've recently completed the recording process for a new album, so we can hopefully expect to hear some new tunes! Rumor has it that fellow RVA ragers Inter Arma will be playing a set at least partially consisting of cover tunes by legendary punk and metal bands, so that will certainly be worth checking out. Also on the bill will be local hardcore bands Devil's Hand and Olde Shame. Olde Shame should be premiering actual cassette copies of their new 5 song demo (which we recently reviewed), and while the 7 inch EP Devil's Hand plan to release through Vinyl Conflict in the very near future is not quite out yet, they should have some new material with which to grace our eardrums as well.
Olde Shame
It should be a great show all around, and it all serves to benefit the Rear Gallery! Their first show, Sacred, featuring art from Jimbo Wilmer, Wayne TM, Adam Weatherford, Jerry Meadors, Wizard Wayne Snyder, Sara Gossett, Kelsey Hulvey, Alex Huneke, Wes Brockman, and more, will premiere this Friday beginning at 3 PM. At this point, we don't actually know the location of the Rear Gallery (it's somewhere in the Fan--that's all we've heard), but representatives from the gallery should be on hand at the benefit show tomorrow night. So come on down, find out the details you need to know to check the place out, and help give your support to the underground art scene here in RVA!
