Richmond’s beloved independent radio station, WRIR, is gearing up to celebrate its 8th birthday with their 8th annual fundraiser, “The Party For The Rest Of Us.” Bringing “radio for the rest of us” to Richmond, 97.3 WRIR has provided quality ad-free radio that’s far from the mainstream. The station’s plethora of shows play everything from alternative country, to afro-Caribbean funk, to a weekly local music showcase. Even if the genre of music isn’t up your alley, anyone with respect for all around good music will appreciate almost everything WRIR plays.

Ad free radio? With good music? How can this exist? Only with your help. With your recommended donation of 10 dollars, the station’s eight-year celebration can help the station pump out another year of quality tunes. So come out and support the radio station that fulfills your demand for groovy airwaves!

The party includes a killer lineup of local bands, WRIR DJ performances, and much more. The local bill includes freak-folk heroes Wolf//Goat, shoewave surfers Canary Oh Canary, the pops-swing music of The Upper East Side Big Band, and headliners Dead Fame. There will also be a variety of sidestage showcases presented by several local groups. Richmond Comedy Coalition will present an edition of their long-running "Richmond Famous" interview series featuring several WRIR DJs. The Cheats Movement blog presents a showcase of local hip hop acts, including Black Liquid And The New Juice Crew, several artists affiliated with YFD Clothing, and local producer extraoirdinaire Ohbliv. Secretly Y'all, the ongoing storyteller series, presents a program entitled The Musician's Secrets, which promises to be sort of an RVA version of VH1 Storytellers. Plus, you can look forward to a presentation by The Listening Room, a performance by the Colloquial Orchestra, and an opening drum ceremony by YoughTaNund.

The February 1st event will be part of the month’s First Friday Art Walk, and should offer some of the best bands and people-watching the evening has to offer. So by all means, make sure you are in attendance! The party is located at The Renaissance Ballroom (107 W. Broad St.), and will take place from 7 p.m. to midnight. For more info, click HERE.
