If you like to dance, we've got the show for you! This Saturday, Chaz Bundick, better known to fans far and wide as Toro Y Moi, will take the stage at the National to bring his excellent blend of hip grooves and intelligent pop to RVA. On tour to celebrate the release of his brand-new third album, Anything In Return, the recent California transplant (originally from South Carolina) has moved beyond his origins in the ephemeral "chillwave" fad and delivered his catchiest album to date. In a recent conversation with Pitchfork, Bundick stated that "a lot of my previous material was referencing more obscure artists, but this one was an experiment to see what would happen if I made a really poppy album." Having heard the results, it's clear that what's happened is that Toro Y Moi have taken things to the next level, cutting back a bit on the washy synth sounds in favor of a more straightforwardly danceable sound that still contains all of the elements that made his early work stand out. Indie hipsters and EDM ragers alike should find plenty to enjoy here, and you can expect the RVA to turn into a city-sized party at the National this Saturday night.
