VCU is on spring break and it is snowing outside. The weather has a sense of humor, I see. Here are some things worth digging out your car for this weekend (assuming it isn't 70 degrees by Friday, of course):
Friday, 3/8: WRIR's Spring 2013 Launch Party @ Strange Matter
If you love Richmond's independent radio, you should check out the WRIR Spring 2013 Launch Party at Strange Matter this Friday. The show has a suggested $5 donation to benefit WRIR, and WRIR members who bring their VIP card get in free. Hoax Hunters, Sacred Teachers, and Brandi Price & Kyle Harris will be the bands playing, all of which featuring members from awesome local psych band Diamond Center, so expect some tripped out and relaxing music to carry you through the evening. Come out, get a few drinks, and support Radio For the Rest of Us!
Saturday, 3/9: Beat Down The Kid @ Bellytimber
If you can't seem to commit to anything this weekend, just head down to Bellytimber for some drinks and to hear Beat Down The Kid mix. He plays rap, trap, dubstep--a little bit of everything that's in demand in the dance world right now--and even if these genres aren't your thing, it's hard to keep from at least tapping your feet to this kind of music, if not having a full-on dance freakout. Plus, there's no cover charge; it's basically just hanging out at the bar with the added bonus of a good live DJ.
Saturday, 3/9: Bump in the Night @ Balliceaux
For the more serious dance party connoisseur who gets offended at the very idea of spending their whole night listening to trap and rap and remixes, there is also Bump in the Night, the only dance party in Richmond hosted by three local female artists and DJs: Sister Goldenhaze, DJ Mixie, and Area Woman. They play everything from world music and jazz to funk and salsa and psych rock, plus they spin vinyl and have visualizations. Best dance party in town!
Saturday, 3/9: Iron Reagan @ Strange Matter
It's almost all local (with the exception of Hot Graves), but it's all metal! Iron Reagan headline this Strange Matter thrasher in support of their new LP, along with local favorites Humungus, Occultist, and Unsacred. I can't promise this will be a once-in-a-lifetime show, since all the bands are pretty much local staples, but Iron Reagan always bring a party, and if you haven't caught any of the openers before, they are all well worth it.
Sunday, 3/10: The Horn Presents @ The Camel
Local VCU online media gurus The Horn are releasing The Horn Vol. 3, their third compilation of local musical acts, and they're putting on a free show at The Camel in its honor, featuring Fight Cloud, Eurotics, Quango Almo, The Northerners, and Zac Hryciak and the Jungle Beat. They will also be giving away the compilation at the show and shooting a live video. This is a great way to spend a lazy Sunday night supporting local music!
There are plenty of other awesome events happening this weekend too! Check out our entire calendar here!
