Teenagers, Television, And Sadness: An Interview With Slutever

Slutever is a two-piece punk rock band from Philadelphia comprised of Nicole Snyder and Rachel Gagliardi. Both play guitar, drums and sing interchangeably. Listening to Slutever is like taking a shot made up of equal parts Courtney Love, Beavis and Butthead, cheeseburgers, weed, and rock and roll. In other words, they wail.

The two BFFs in Slutever met in high school, and both studied Music Industry at Drexel. They’ve been playing together ever since. Slutever writes songs about teen angst, breakups, and TV, not unlike a lot of their punk/garage-rock brethren. (They also do a killer cover of the Hole song “Violet.”) Slutever embodies the DIY sensibility in the best possible way. The two manage the business side of things, create all their own merch and album art, and book their own tours.

Slutever is also refreshingly real. They like drinking beer (preferably free), dreamy southern rockers Jeff the Brotherhood, and have recently been whiling away the hours watching Friends after snagging a thrift store copy for cheap. They say their core fan base is teen girls—the reasons why are obvious. However, they downplay their more widespread appeal and growing popularity, which is the result of their raw, unadulterated sound and a lot of hard work.

I had the extreme pleasure of talking with Nicole and Rachel at Good Taste, a Chinese restaurant here in Richmond next door to Strange Matter, where they played later that night. Over Coca-Cola Classic and egg rolls, I fired some hard-hitting questions their way--such as: who would they rather date, Ryan Gosling or Paul Rudd; how did their song “So Prone” end up in a Forever 21 commercial; and where do they see the band in five years. Check it out:

Keep your eyes peeled for a copy of their limited edition 7” with singles “1994” and “Spit,” or better yet, catch them live before their tour ends.
