If you follow the career of alternative metal renaissance man Mike Patton, then you're surely already stoked about this, but fans of the Jesus Lizard, Helmet, and Battles have just as many reasons to rejoice. Tomahawk, the supergroup featuring members of all of those bands and more, will be bringing their inimitable brand of auditory chaos to the 9:30 Club just over a month from now, on Wednesday, June 5--and your fellow music fans at RVA Magazine want to help you see the show for free! Coming together back in 2000, when the always-active Mr. Patton got bored and decided that it was time to start another band, Tomahawk unites Patton with Jesus Lizard guitarist Duane Denison, Helmet/Battles drummer John Stanier, and as of last year, Mr. Bungle/Fantomas/Melvins-lite bassist Trevor Dunn. They released their most recent album, Oddfellows, earlier this year, and it carried on the sound they'd established on their three previous full-lengths--unorthodox, chaotic, and fiercely rockin' guitar riffs; fueled by the rock-solid rhythmic work of Dunn and Stanier; topped by Mike Patton's passionate, original, and unique vocal approach. Despite the stylistic twists and turns the group engages in at various points over the course of the album's duration, it maintains a consistent standard of quality, and we here at RVA Mag are big fans. Hearing these songs, as well as the best of their first three albums, in a live setting will be a rare treat, and with the addition of handmade hybrid-instrument technicians Buke And Gase to the bill, you're guaranteed an evening that is interesting from the moment the doors of the 9:30 Club swing open.

Just to get you that little bit more stoked about what you'll be seeing on June 5, here's the video for the title track to the latest Tomahawk album, Oddfellows. On the surface, it's your typical live performance video, but once you start paying attention, you'll notice that a lot of odd things are going on. We're not necessarily promising that the live Tomahawk experience you get at the 9:30 Club will be this weird, but really, with these guys, you never know.
