Summer has finally arrived, at least in terms of classes officially being over. You've worked hard this year, you've endured school, work, and two extra weeks of cold weather, so you deserve to treat yourself to some fun. This weekend there are a plenty of art shows and concerts to get your summer started off right, as well as plenty of other things to do. Here are some suggestions for getting the most out of your weekend!

Friday, 5/10: Clocked Out: Diversity Thrift Staff Art Show @ GCCR Gallery

This Friday, Diversity Thrift is putting together a very unique art show consisting only of work by the employees at our beloved, pride-touting local thrift shop. Not only is it an amazing coincidence that many of their workers are also artists, it is awesome that an employer is being this supportive of his employees talents. It makes a perfect, more positive addendum to the Mayday events of last week. Come out to GCCR Gallery on Friday at 7 PM for this show's opening reception, and experience the diverse art of Diversity Thrift.

Friday, 5/10: Infrasound Crew Presents: Progression Vol. 2 @ The Camel

The local drum n' bass and dubstep collective Infrasound are presenting their second-ever installment of Progression, an event that brings together local artists, DJs, and MCs for a night of music, visualizations, and live art. There will be performances from Mike Phear of Steez Promo fame, along with iLL Omen, M.Pyre, and many more, plus live art from Christina Chow. Check this out if you like the chiller side of DNB, or if you're a fan of the rave scene who wants to explore the music on a more in-depth level.

Friday, 5/10: The Catalyst 10th Anniversary Show @ The Nile

The Catalyst have been a favorite local act for years, playing with everyone from indie and experimental bands to punk, metal and noise acts. Now, these solid dudes are celebrating their 10th anniversary as a unit at Nile, putting on a donations-only show with Lizard Police from Tulsa, OK and local metal band Hellbear. Don't miss this if you're a fan of The Catalyst's heavy, experimental sound.

Saturday, 5/11: Scorpio Brothers DJ Nite @ The Well

Our beloved Cous Cous may be gone on paper, but in reality they are back open as The Well, a new rustic sandwich shop. They celebrate their reopening this Saturday with a Scorpio Brothers DJ night. There will be plenty of funk and soul pumping all night, and you'll get a chance to check out the spot before it becomes the new Richmond staple hangout we all know it is destined to be. Come dance!

Saturday, 5/11: The Crypts @ Strange Matter

This Saturday, there is an all-star indie cast at Strange Matter as Cramps-worshipping garage band The Crypts from Fredericksburg join Richmond's own Heavy Midgets, Herro Sugar, and Paul Ivey and the Rubes. This should be an eclectic yet danceable night of rock n' roll, and it's a five dollar show that starts at 5:00pm, so check it out for cheap and be home in time to crash early for work (if you're unlucky enough to work Sunday morning). Or, do something else in our lovely city!
