The Fourth of July madness is over, but there is still plenty of cool stuff to do this weekend! Cardinal Compass are releasing an EP, Hockey are coming down from Portland, OR, and the all-girl DJ collective that is Bump in the Night are playing their one-year anniversary gig. So dig some indie tunes, rock out to some metal, or get down on the dance floor. Happy summer!
Friday, 7/12: Cardinal Compass EP Release @ Strange Matter
Local Indie darlings Cardinal Compass celebrate the release of their new EP, Readymade, at Strange Matter this Friday night. This will also be their last show with their current bassist, so come send him off in style. They will be joined by other local acts Andrew Alli, Indigo and the Folks, and Haints in the Holler. This is a great chance to check out some local indie stuff live and grab a copy of Readymade. Not bad for a five dollar cover charge. Check it out!
Friday, 7/12: From Fragile Seeds CD Release Party @ McCormack's
If you gravitate towards heavier things, then you might prefer this other record release show happening the same night. Post-hardcore quartet From Fragile Seeds have been generating a bit of a buzz on the outskirts of the local scene, but they're ready to take things to a new level with the release of their debut album, There Are No Maps Left. As well as offering CD copies of the album for sale for the first time, the group will be performing the entire album in sequence as the kickoff for their ten-day tour across the mid-Atlantic states supporting the CD. They'll be supported on this show by fellow up-and-coming local post-rockers Letters As Numbers, and admission is a mere $3, so that you'll have some scratch left to pick up a copy of the new album. How can you resist?
Saturday, 7/13: Bump in the Night One Year Anniversary@ Balliceaux
Everyone's favorite three-girl DJ team, Bump in the Night, are spinning in celebration of their one-year anniversary as a unit! These three artists and music lovers, Area Woman, Sister Goldenhaze, and DJ Mixie, have been playing soul, funk, gospel, disco, etc. for one whole revolution around the sun now, and they are stoked about it. The show will be at 10:30pm at Balliceaux, as always, and of course, it will be free! Don't miss out.
Saturday, 7/13: Hockey @ Strange Matter
Hockey, the popular new wave band from Portland, OR, are playing this Saturday at Strange Matter. Fans of indie-influenced new wave love this band, and they don't get down to these parts very often! Appearing with them are Saint Motel, a dream-pop band from L.A., and SWIMM, a psychedelic rock indie band from Florida. Cover is fifteen dollars, but it really looks worth it!
Sunday, 7/14: Mood Rings @ Strange Matter
If you haven't already had enough alternative cuteness, Mood Rings, the shoegazey dreampop band from Atlanta, will be appearing at Strange Matter on Sunday to play the late show. Mood Rings are touring in support of their new album, VPI Harmony, released this past Monday on Mexican Summer. They are playing with local psych rockers Basmati, and heavy post-rockers Everyone Dies in the End. Eight bucks gets you in, and there's plenty of rock to go around.
