Sound-Check Studios opened earlier this year in the Scott's Addition neighborhood. This former industrial/warehouse district, which runs west of Boulevard between W. Broad St and The Diamond, has seen quite a bit of development over the past half-decade, with everything from upscale apartments to coffee shops and movie theaters popping up on its streets. Now, Sound-Check Studios hopes to bring another new endeavor to the area, expanding beyond its current function as a studio and rehearsal space to become what owner Brian Farquhar calls a "musician's community center."The Clay St warehouse that currently houses Sound-Check is only partially renovated at this point. In addition to its full recording studio and multiple rehearsal rooms, Farquhar hopes to trick out the large central space with a soundstage equipped with lights, a PA system, and house equipment usable by the bands.
Farquhar's goal in creating this space is to bring together the local music community in a space that provides all of the services a band could hope to utilize under one roof. He sees the soundstage as something "that the music community can use for so many things (full dress rehearsals, album release parties, open mic nights, battle of the bands, just to name a few)," as he says on the indiegogo campaign page. Sound-Check hopes to "give the city a centerpiece to promote its up and coming talent without losing the message behind the liquor sales"--an admirable goal, though it may be difficult to realize in this PBR-loving city.
Regardless, it's good to see people working to improve the options for recording, rehearsal, and performance spaces here in the city, so consider lending Sound-Check Studios your support! The campaign has a few weeks left to reach its rather lofty goal of $27,000, but in addition to the usual swag (t-shirts, stickers, beer koozies, etc), they've got some really good prizes available for those who are able to shell out. Tickets to the grand opening party--including VIP passes for those who pledge a little more--are just the beginning. Also up for grabs are the opportunity to throw an event at the venue once it's completed, free of charge; a free guitar; and even the chance to name the stage!
