Extraordinary RVA musician Matthew E. White turned a lot of heads when he released his first solo project, Big Inner, in August of last year. The album is the first project to come out of White’s own label, Spacebomb, and it received plaudits from a vast cross-section of the indie rock universe (including a rave review from Pitchfork and a collaborative tour with the Mountain Goats). Recently he has been given another complimentary nod from British indie-dance outfit Hot Chip, who just released a remix of his song "Big Love."
In the original "Big Love," White shows off a less-is-more vocal approach that is locked in seamlessly with the instrumentation. Cameron Ralston sets the framework for the song with his John Paul Jones-style bass line, which provides a rock-solid foundation for Trey Pollard’s raunchy, thick lead guitar and Gabe Churray’s elegant piano work. It is an intense, soulful song that will have you nodding your head in a matter of moments.
On Hot Chip’s remix, they manage to maintain the original vibe, but use White’s song as a blueprint for a seven-minute synth-laden dance thriller. For their remix, Hot Chip cranked Ralston’s bass line, really bringing it forward in the mix. Some more reverb on the vocals, clever drum samples breaking up the song, Hot Chip killing it on some original synth and guitar, and you have a track that is well worth your time. Even if you were a huge fan of the original, you're sure to enjoy this new treatment. Give it a listen below.
