The legendary titans of sludge, who were kings of Seattle back when "grunge" was a word for what you tracked across the kitchen floor on a rainy day, are coming to Washington DC--and you could be seeing them for free! Yes, folks, in their 30th year of existence, The Melvins are still going strong, and they're currently on tour to celebrate their anniversary and support their latest album, a collection of covers entitled Everybody Loves Sausages. The album features multiple Melvins lineups doing songs originally performed by everyone from Venom to Queen to Throbbing Gristle to Roxy Music, but their current tour is a production of the four-piece lineup that the band has worked with for the past decade or so. Longtime members King Buzzo (guitar/vocals) and Dale Crover (drums) are joined by Seattle power duo Big Business, featuring Jared Warren on bass and occasional vocals and Coady Willis on a second drum kit--though actually, for this tour, Warren will be temporarily replaced by Butthole Surfers bassist Jeff Pinkus (who also leads opening band Honky). Because Crover is right-handed and Willis is left-handed, the two drummers actually play next to each other on a merged kit in which both men share some drums and cymbals. The unique setup only adds to the already amazing (and incredibly loud) live show that the Melvins deliver every time they play. You won't wanna miss it, so come celebrate the 30th anniversary of these math-metal/doom-punk pioneers in fine style at the 9:30 Club!

And just in case a few of you out there aren't familiar with the awesome power of the Melvins, or if you want a sneak preview of the dual drum-kit action you're in for at 9:30 next Saturday, here's a video for you to check out. Filmed in 2010 at Bonnaroo, this is The Melvins blasting through "Civilized Worm," one of the highlights from their 2006 album (A) Senile Animal. That record was the first to showcase their dual-drum lineup, but it was their fifteenth overall, and stacked up well alongside previous classics such as Gluey Porch Treatments, Houdini (produced by Kurt Cobain), and Stoner Witch. So if you dig this, don't worry, there's plenty more where that came from. And if you don't dig this, what the heck is wrong with you?
