Paste Magazine is currently in the middle of rolling out their 50 States Project, an in-depth look at the best music arising from each of the states of the union, and a great way to prove that excellent music can and does arise from many places besides the cliche music cities (New York, LA, Nashville, Chicago, etc). For their Virginia article, which was posted online yesterday, they reached out to Reggie Pace to contribute a list, and he came through with a fascinating group of mostly RVA-based bands that even the most tapped-in local scenesters could learn a thing or two from. Pace, who plays trombone with No BS! Brass Band and Glows In The Dark and has worked with Bon Iver and Matthew E. White, among others, has interests in many different musical areas, and his list of bands reflects that. Training the spotlight on artists from one-man noise-rock project Gull to progressive hip hop producer Ohbliv to acoustic punk/Americana songwriter Tim Barry to mathematically inclined shredders The Trillions, Pace even brings up a few artists that I haven't heard yet (Butcher Brown, Snow Panda). No doubt there are a few here that you have been sleeping on as well, and you would be well advised to check all of them out through the handy links and video embeds to be found on Paste's website. So click through and check it out!
