No BS Brass Band
Hailing from Richmond, VA, the horn driven 10-piece No BS Brass Band unleash a thrilling blast of New Orleans inspired, fun- fueled, rock-anchored, jazz tinged, Kung Fu sound. No BS Brass has quickly become an epicenter of heart-pounding energy and uncontrollable dancing.
In early 2006, the concept for No BS Brass grew out of the friendship of founders Reggie Pace and Lance Koehler. Wanting to start a brass band with one foot in the rich tradition of such groups and one foot stepping into the future, Reggie and Lance recruited musicians with an incredible combination of skills and personality, and the resulting 10-piece band touts Richmond's heaviest sounds. The musicians of No BS Brass knew that their sound had to live up to the name. In putting together the compositions and arrangements, the band stripped away all of the "b.s." to give the audience something solid, unique, organic, raw and powerful, qualities that embody the true "Richmond sound." While the band focuses on ensemble playing, it leaves room for each member to step to the front, upping the ante with improvisation.
No BS! Brass Band has performed all over the East Coast, including a diverse array of festivals such as Camp Barefoot, the Richmond Folk Festival, Gainesville Fest, and VCU's BrassFest. Equally at home in the music club, the punk rock festival, the concert hall stage or on the parade route, the band creates new believers wherever it goes.
The Big Payback
The Big Payback is a ten piece musical powerhouse dedicated to recreating the music of James Brown as accurately and as passionately as possible.
No stone is left unturned! Their repertoire is filled with all the classic hits you know and love, as well as tons of J.B.’s rarities and B sides. Splits, hits, turns, and segues, it’s all here! With so much emphasis on authenticity, even the Godfather would have to jump back and kiss himself. The most cynical of cynics will have their minds blown and their hearts warmed from the second the beat drops until they’re left exhausted, sweaty, and smiling hours later.
This is truly something to behold, people! It’s exactly what you would and should expect from a top notch tribute band.
The Big Payback ain't messin’ around. Mother Popcorn, Super Bad, Soul Power, I Feel Good, Pass the Peas, Papa’s Got a Brand New Bag, Sex Machine!!!! You name it, you got it!! All of ‘em, live and in your face, with as much energy as you can possibly stand. Ten of the most talented musicians from the Mid-Atlantic region bringing you the closest thing to the real thing, The Big Payback.
No wigs, no gimmicks, no clichés. An honest, painstakingly researched, representation of the Godfather of Soul, James Brown and his band, at their musical peak. Can you stand it?
Audio Ammo
Audio Ammo Kills. Audio Ammo was formed in 2004 in Richmond, VA by DJ’s Long Jawns, Doddie, and OhLaRoc. Since their early days rocking some of the wildest house parties around the Richmond area, the crew have since grown to be major players in the region’s DJ scene. Dispersed throughout the VA/DC area, the crew hosts a monthly Richmond banger, Brain Drain—its magnum opus. Audio Ammo members include Long Jawns (RVA), DJ Doddie (RVA), DJvsWILD (NYC), Bobby LaBeat (RVA), Ohlaroc (NYC), and Bill the Gent (DC). In the Summer of 2009 Audio Ammo held it’s first Brain Drain party in Richmond, VA and has gained a cult following ever since. In a city that’s known for a thriving party scene, Audio Ammo’s Brain Drain outshined others to become one of the most popular parties on the East Coast. The crew continues to rep locally and nationally, making multiple appearances on the Mad Decent blog with leading and influential tracks in the Moombahton genre.
The People's Blues of Richmond
The People's Blues of Richmond renders their audiences speechless in a pile of Rock and Roll ash. Direct to you from--you guessed it--Richmond, Virginia, this young band is taking blues rock to scorching new heights. Tim Beavers, guitar and lead vocals, is both Page and Plant. Matt Volkes, bass guitar, tears down buildings for a living. And Raphael Katchinoff, on the drum kit and percussion, is the fiery skeleton behind the wheel. PBR, as they are referred to for short, are playing shows all across the East Coast and picking up new fans in each town they visit. Their sound is a cross between The Doors and Zeppelin, or maybe between an atomic blast and a crashing tsunami; either way, it's big and it's going to knock you down. Prepare yourself, because here comes PBR.
Long Arms
Long Arms began as a project for former Fun Size/River City High vocalist James Menefee, and burst onto the scene last year with their debut LP, Long Arms To Hold You. Sonically, their genre is not easy to pin down, and their website claims their style of music as "indiepunkrockcountryfolktwangpop." Though they are clearly influenced by the work of Paul Westerberg, both as a solo artist and with his legendary band The Replacements, influences from both James's pop-punk past and the more countrified influences come through quite strongly, from The Lemonheads and Ryan Adams to the Old 97's and Springsteen, with a little old-fashioned punk angst to round it out. The six-piece band boasts a solid line up of old friends, featuring Prabir Mehta (formerly of Prabir and the Substitutes), Greg Butler (from James' days in River City High), Treesa Gold (In Prabir's other band Goldrush), Alex Smith and Chuck Fuller, two erstwhile-Southside RVA boys who have known James since childhood. They recently released a split 7" record with local favorites Horsehead--featuring a new song called "Crazy Bet," about Richmond's favorite traitor, Civil War spy, and pariah Elizabeth Van Lew--showing their unique way of turning a touchy local subject into a catchy sing-a-long. The band is currently in the studio working on the follow-up to their debut.
Kings of Belmont
The Kings of Belmont thrive off performing live and their shows have been described as "anything but predictable." While the set lists and song arrangements vary from show to show, the one constant is the energy of the band. This energy is matched by their loyal fans that come to each show prepared to lay it all out. The dynamic is intense, infectious and will make you want more.
Less Than Jake
It's been a wild and crazy ride for Gainesville's Less Than Jake, who first met at the University Of Florida over a decade and a half ago. But instead of kicking their feet up and resting on their laurels, the ever-busy quintet have been working hard on the next chapter of Less Than Jake. Successfully extricating themselves from their major label contract (even though they still owed one more record to the label), they started their own label, Sleep It Off Records, and now are in the driver's seat, with forthcoming reissues of all their old albums. "After a decade an a half of being in the band, we are now our own bosses for real and the excitement of that can peel paint off the walls," says drummer Vinnie.
Through their decade and a half career, they've traveled the world multiple times -- with the Warped Tour, opening for Bon Jovi, and as headliners. "Each record is a snapshot of who the band is and was at the moment of writing and recording," Vinnie says. And what better way to revisit their history than with a fresh new take on their old material. Each re-release will come with all new artwork and a bonus DVD of previously unreleased material.
"If you look at the career of our band, you have the roots of the tree. And that's our initial inspiration that we used for the band, which was East Bay pop/punk; Screeching Weasel, early Green Day, Operation Ivy," Vinnie says. "If you look at that as the roots, then you have our career as the body of the tree, and the leaves are the latest inspirations of things, whether they're friends, family, or whatever."
"People have a preconceived notion that Less Than Jake is a ska/punk band, that we're wacky and silly, and that may be a certain side of ourselves live, but there's also another side and that's a beautiful thing about our band - it's multi-headed," he says proudly. "We can be different things at different times; we can be socially relevant and we can still be musically relevant 16 years after being together, still progressing musically, not only as players, but as far as musical direction. We can jump outside the box of what people expect, and now that we're in control, what you'll be getting is Less Than Jake -unfiltered and over-amplified."
