New York's Woods have long had a special relationship with the RVA underground music scene, which dates back to their pre-Woods band Meneguar. However, over the last few years, they've been seeking their fortune around the country and the world, and while their profile has greatly increased in those intervening years, Woods hasn't actually played Richmond since 2008. But now, over three years after their last local appearance, at a house show in Oregon Hill, they're back! They'll be at Strange Matter tomorrow night, promoting their sixth album, Sun And Shade, released this summer ("Another year, another fine Woods album," said Pitchfork's Mark Richardson at the time). They place equal emphasis on the folk-pop elements of their sound and a psychedelic sensibility that drives their more improvisational experiments and has an essential role in making their live performances fascinating and unpredictable. That's a good enough reason right there for you to make sure you make it to this show tomorrow night, but as a bonus, New England musical space rangers Mmoss will be on the scene, as will RVA's own The Diamond Center, who've spent the past couple of years inciting a psychedelic revolution on the local scene. With local DJ and blogger extraordinaire Revolt Of The Apes supplying the tunes between bands, this night is guaranteed to be full of excellent music from beginning to end! Don't miss it!
