In light of the fact that Suppression leader Jason Hodges has been prone in recent months to making material by Mutwawa, his two-piece experimental project with Gary Stevens of Head Molt, available for free download as soon as the physical versions of the releases go out of print, I must admit that my first thought upon finding out that Suppression's 2001 EP, Burnt-Out Receptacles, was now available for free download was, "So did it just finally go out of print?" If I'm right, that's a depressing thought, because this is a great EP, and it'd be a shame if it took 10 years to sell out of the original pressing. I picked it up in its original 7 inch vinyl form back in 2002 or thereabouts. It's the first Suppression release to feature the current lineup of Jason (bass, vocals) and Ryan Parrish (drums). My first listen was a bit of a shock to the system--over the previous decade or so, I'd grown used to Suppression walking the fine line between chaotic grindcore and improvisational noise. The revamped lineup played something that sounded more to me like the Butthole Surfers at the time, which threw me for a loop. But once I got used to what they were doing, I really liked this new version of Suppression--which was doubly true once I saw them live. If you still haven't had the pleasure, make sure to keep an eye out. They don't play shows very often, but when they do, it is not to be missed. Anyway, the four songs on this record are great--as is the silly fake-porno intro by Annie Sachs of Tickley Feather--and the price is certainly right, so don't hesitate. Download these tracks now!
