Béatrice Martin, the 22-year-old Montreal-based Francophone singer/keyboardist who goes by the name Coeur De Pirate, will be at the 9:30 Club in less than two weeks, on Wednesday, January 25, and we have a pair of tickets to give away! Coeur De Pirate just released their second album, Blonde, on November 11. The title is a double entendre--in Quebecois French, it refers not only to the hair color but is also a common slang term for "girlfriend." But more importantly, it's a beautiful collection of 60s-influenced pop songs which capture the orchestral grandeur of the French pop of that era, while also retaining a decidedly modern feel. Of course, I have no idea what Martin is singing about, as I don't speak a word of French, but her voice sounds so nice and the melodies are so upbeat and catchy that it's pretty much irrelevant. Whether you speak French or not, you can expect to have a great time seeing this show.

After the jump, check out Coeur De Pirate's video for "Adieu," the single from their new album, Blonde. It's kind of strange--Béatrice Martin plays football and throws watermelons that explode, for starters. I don't know, maybe it would make more sense if I spoke French and could understand a single word of the dialogue in the video. Or maybe it's just bizarre in any language.
