There's been quite a bit of controversy over the last several months about the Carter Jones Skatepark, a park located at 2715 Bainbridge St. in Southside. In existence as the city's only officially sanctioned skate park for over two years now, the park's infrastructure was put into place by resourceful local skaters, who built the park on a disused local tennis court. Now, complaints from neighbors and a seemingly apathetic city approach to the situation has threatened the closing of Richmond's only skate park. Local photographer and videographer Kontra of Kromatic Photography shot this 12-minute short documentary film in order to raise awareness of the situation and present all sides of the debate around the issue. The film features interviews with skaters who use the park and residents of the adjacent neighborhood, as well as footage of a crowded, clearly well-used and well-loved park on a Saturday afternoon. The film paints a picture of a location that plays an important role in the life of the neighborhood, and is a gathering place for residents from all over Richmond, which mostly enjoys support from members of the local community. There is a public meeting between city officials and concerned citizens scheduled for 7 PM on Wednesday, February 15 at 7 PM at the Roundhouse in Byrd Park. Skaters in the community who make use of the park, and Richmond residents who consider this an important issue, are highly encouraged to attend and make your voices heard.
