DAILY FIX: White Hills, "Pads Of Light"

Some of you might remember New York psychedelic hard rockers White Hills from the Revolt Of The Apes interview with them we ran around this time last year. At the time, their most recent LP was a self-titled release from 2010, but now they've returned with followup Frying On This Rock, on Thrill Jockey Records, which comes out in a couple of weeks. The first single, "Pads Of Light," is a heavy-psych tune full of blazing riffs, which replaces the more conventional verse-chorus pop structure you might expect with a repetitive succession of riffs that surprisingly don't get annoying but instead create a hypnotic droning effect. The result lands somewhere between Space Ritual-era Hawkwind and pre-Queens Of the Stone Age desert-rockers Kyuss. The video adds imagery with a fittingly hallucinatory feel, mixing a fisheye travelogue around urban cityscapes most likely drawn from the band's hometown of NYC with shots of silhouetted figures in the desert at sunlight holding glowing orbs up to the sky. It's like the awesomest four-minute acid trip ever. Dig it.
