DAILY FIX: Fam-Lay, "Skrung Owt" (NSFW)

Here's a wild new video for VA Beach rapper Fam-Lay's Neptunes-produced track "Skrung Owt." Astute followers of the VA hip-hop scene will probably have encountered this track before--a leak has been kicking around in various internet circles for at least a couple of years. However, with Fam-Lay's new album TYBO (Turn Your Brain Off) finally scheduled for release sometime this year, the promotional cycle is kicking into high gear. This video should get everyone hyped for the record that promises to have a huge impact on VA hip-hop. The song's dark, ominous beat was composed by Pharrell while he was watching Stanley Kubrick's The Shining, and the video reflects that same spooky energy. In a darkened room full of scantily clad women indulging in mind-altering substances and lascivious behavior, Fam-Lay delivers his verses while rocking the old-school pimp look with a white fur coat. The video is co-directed by RVA contributor Richard Perkins, who can be seen running around in the background snapping pictures; and Shomi Patwary, who owns Illusive Media and participated in the interview with Fam-Lay that we ran last year. In that interview, Patwary talked about creating a new kind of project for Fam-Lay, which would incorporate music and visuals into one big multimedia package. We may be seeing the beginnings of this strategy in the "Skrung Owt" video. But regardless of any bigger plans, one thing's for sure: both the song and the video are awesome, and you should definitely check them out.
