Fans of horror film, heavy metal music, off-kilter musicals, and gothic burlesque will all have occasion to rejoice at the arrival in Richmond this weekend of the Devil's Carnival Road Tour! From director Darren Lynn Bousman (director of Saw II, III, and IV) and writer/actor Terrance Zdunich, who previously brought you Repo! The Genetic Opera, The Devil's Carnival is a similar sort of musically-driven horror film, though word is that this one is a lot darker. The cast features several varieties of well-known names, from veteran actors like Paul Sorvino (Goodfellas), Sean Patrick Flanery (Boondock Saints), and Bill Moseley (House Of 1000 Corpses) to famous musicians like Slipknot percussionist Shawn Crahan, Skinny Puppy frontman Nivek Ogre, gothic violinist Emilie Autumn, and Five Finger Death Punch singer Ivan Moody. This colorful cast comes together to tell the tale of three recently deceased people who arrive in Hell at The Devil's Carnival, a sinister amusement park run by Lucifer himself (Zdunich). Forced to relive the sins that brought them to Hell, the three dead souls ultimately much watch Lucifer's entire carny band perform an unforgettable stage show.
The Richmond showing of The Devil's Carnival takes place on Sunday, April 22, at The Byrd Theatre. The film itself (which is subtitled "Episode 1" and rumored to be the beginning of a trilogy) is not quite feature-length, clocking in at 55 minutes, but to make up for the relatively short running time, the show will include all sorts of extras. Darren Lynn Bousman and Terrance Zdunich will be on hand for a Q&A session, and will be joined in Richmond by Ivan Moody and actor J LaRose (Saw III, Saw IV). The film features 12 original songs, written by Terrance Zdunich and composer Saar Hendelman and performed by members of the cast, and that soundtrack will be available in the form of limited edition CDs that are only available for purchase at screenings of The Devil's Carnival. Plus, catch extra behind the scenes footage and other exclusives that can only be seen at this screening! The Devil's Carnival is not available on DVD and has not even been released into theaters--the only way to see it is to come to this exclusive local screening! So if you dig gore, metal, and intense theatrical craziness, then make sure you show up at the Byrd this Sunday night!
