Direct-to-Video, a new group video show curated by Dylan Languell, hopes to reintroduce Richmond to video as an art form. Languell spent the last 4 and a half months organizing the show to provide a space for artists to experiment in the video medium. "The prospect of video or cinema, or kinetic imagery in this city doesn't get the limelight that painting, sculpture or photography gets," said Lunguell.
The use of digital video was paramount to this show. Dylan said the shift to easily produce video in your home or on your phone has opened creative doors. The walls that once bound video artists have been broken down to allow for more artists less familiar with the medium to take part in its production.
"You can make a film and you have a platform like Youtube or Vimeo - a direct access format - hence Direct to Video. Everything on the tangible level is becoming obsolete, but the accessibility of digital video... it's a format your neighbors, or your friends can do. These artists are not video artists - they're of a dynamic, sculpting, painting, theatrics, music."
All of the artists are VCU arts Alumni - one of the few connections between the contributors or the videos themselves. Languell said the genre of films presented was diverse, with narratives, meditation dance, symbolism, classic and other forms contributed. Of particular interest to Languell was Ross Lannatti's submission. "It's a space that helps recognize what we are experiencing. The theatrical experience. Going and sharing a full space in the dark around each other, but in a very minimal sense."
Languell hopes to keep the project going after Friday's event. He said the support and submissions he received have shown that the local arts community wants more. Judge for yourself This Friday, November 16th at 3:00 PM.
