Washington DC singer-songwriter Justin Jones, who made waves last year with his debut full-length release, Fading Light, will be bringing his passionate brand of bluesy rock n' roll Americana to The Camel in just two weeks, and your friends at RVA Magazine want to help you see his show for free! Starting out playing shows in his spare time while earning his keep behind the bar at the 9:30 Club, Justin's 2010 EP, The Little Fox, was strong enough to convince 9:30 Club co-owner Seth Hurwitz to form a label in order to release Justin's music. In 2012, Fading Light became the first full-length released by 9:30 Club Records, and proceeded to garner rave reviews from NPR, the Washington Post, and many other media outlets.
And it's not hard to see why--Justin's heartland rock n' roll sound incorporates a driving backbeat into the wistful, country-influenced melodies that make up the foundation of his songwriting. He's got a rocking band behind him, and the trio of Tracy Epperson (bass), Bobby Thompson (guitar), and Mike Smirnoff (drums) helps keep things interesting. It's tough to predict what musical direction he'll take next. Regardless of whether he's in full-on rock mode or taking things in a quieter, more introspective direction, though, one thing you can be sure of with Justin Jones is that he'll give you a great show.

Just to give you an idea of what you're in for on March 13 when Justin comes to RVA, we've got some excellent footage here from his last visit to the Camel, on September 1st of last year. This raging performance of "My Father's Gun," from Fading Light, encapsulates both sides of Justin's music in one five-minute song, beginning with the dark, foreboding quiet of the song's early portion, which then bursts into full-on passionate rock n' roll around the halfway point, with Justin's voice and guitar soaring mightily overtop of the strong backing of his three-piece band. Plus, the amusing banter at the beginning, and the trickery with the song's ending, display Justin's cheerful rapport with the audience. Watch this video, and get stoked, because soon he'll be back to lay some magic on us once again.
