Looking for an excuse to get some mountain air and enjoy world renowned photography? The Look 3 Festival of the Photograph is happening this weekend in Charlottesville and offers all of the above. To take place on June 13-15 2013, the festival features gallery shows, outdoor exhibits, nightly projections, and on-stage interviews. All of this is set to take place along Charlottesville’s historic and incredibly quaint Downtown Mall. A mere hour away from RVA, this world class event is sponsored by the likes of National Geographic, Canon, the Nature Conservancy, among other well reputed names.
Tim Laman
The event stretches beyond this weekend, as Look 3 involved Charlottesville galleries in exhibits throughout the entire month, many of which began this past First Friday. Whether you’d like to casually observe art or completely nerd out amongst other photography aficionados, a variety of experiences await attendees. One can stroll the Downtown Mall and take in National Geographic photographer Tim Laman’s photos. Called Trees, this exhibition is the fruit of Laman’s 10 year labor to document every known species of Birds-of-Paradise. The birds’ photos will grace the branches of the Mall’s trees, so festival-goers and the general public alike will have a chance to take in some art. Another option is the Shots and Works event. This larger showcase takes place Friday and Saturday evenings at the Ntelos Pavilion, and will showcase innovative current photography to “present a dynamic cross-section of work from photojournalism to fine art.” For those who truly want to delve deep into this festival, the Insight Artists events provide a smaller scale, intimate environment for attendees to engage with the movers and shakers of photography.
