Looks like we've got some more new Ty Segall... again. Take a listen:

I hope that didn't come off as critical, I love pretty much everything Segall does. This new venture is fairly mellow considering his past few releases - it also sounds even more rough and tumble than usual - Check out NPR's full stream of the album here - and tell me it doesn't sound like its soaked in pachouli and wrapped in a poncho.

I don't know if I'll keep Sleeper in as heavy rotation as I have albums like Twins and Goodbye Bread - but there are moments when Segall's garage sound comes through strong and I'm reminded why he's one of the best live acts touring today.

In addition to streaming the whole album, NPR said Segall wrote Sleeper after loosing his father to cancer and having his relationship with his mother crumble. NPR doesn't think there's much of a confessional on this record, but I picked up some fairly bummed out undertones in here - this album certainly lacks the energy and cut-loose/fuck'em'all attitude that makes Segall stand out among his many many surf/garage-rock peers.

It's also mostly acoustic jams with the occasional ripping solo - very occasionally - but there's some good slide work and melody creation.

Honestly, this album is a little emotionally draining - its obvious he was in a rough place through the recording process, you can hear it in his voice and in the notes he plays.

Sleeper drops 8/20 - you can pre-order it from Drag City's website.

Give it a listen, let us know what you think.
